Hi! Been a while since I posted a comment here. To be honest, I’ve been drifting away from Robbie a bit. I wasn’t going to say anything at first but I’ve been following Robbie for a long time and I have very fond memories of this comic, and I wanted to share my thoughts on this new issue. Ever since chapter 12 started I noticed something was off with the usual pacing the story has had for so long. I also noticed this in issue 11, more mildly, but #12 has felt really weird for me. I’ve always thought Robbie’s slow pacing was very appropiate for a variety of reasons. And I always admired that after working weekly on it for so many years, the progression never felt rushed. Now I’m starting to feel the opposite. I feel chapter 12 has been all over the place in that regard. Especially in these last 9-10 pages, the relationships between characters seem to have jumped three steps without the proper development. The way Martin and Robbie touch each other doesn’t seem natural with how shy they have been acting so far. I don’t understand where the sudden attraction between Jen and Liah comes from. And this page I believe is unearned. Even thought Jen’s feelings for Robbie have been foreshadowed, I expected you to explore them a bit more deeply before reaching this point, which to me seems abrupt. With the slow care the comic takes with most things, this should have been one of the topics to be treated without hurry. I get the feeling (since chapter 11-12) that you have approached the situations and relationships between characters more lightly, something which had always been worked on so carefully.
I really don’t intend to be harsh, I’ve always been a fan of your work, an for that I wanted to give my impressions on what has been going on, because I very much care for this story as a reader. I’m unsure if you will agree with anything I’ve said, just wanted to point it out.
Take care!
I suspect that some of the change in pacing is… well it’s a few things. 12 went through a couple of versions, because we realized this was the turning point for the story to actually wrap up. The story had to take kind of a turn because we realized that we needed to have the plot actually start to move, rather than just slowly running around in circles. Having to come to terms with actually wrapping up the story changed things up a bit, and the painful truth of that is that if we don’t wrap it up, we probably won’t actually bring it to a close. As it is, we have a few things in the works aside from this project that might be putting some strain on this one in the interim. The script has been written for quite a while now, but I’m still a ways out from finishing the art.
Being knee deep in the production, it’s hard to sometimes step back and ask if things are going too fast or too slow, so I hadn’t noticed any change in the pacing. I’ll take this into consideration and see if the art can help reflect how the pacing should feel.
